Lesson 12

Connecting Situations and Graphs

These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 2, Lesson 12 support success in that lesson.

Lesson Narrative

The mathematical purpose of this lesson is for students to practice connecting written descriptions, equations, and graphs representing the same situation. In the first activity, students connect graphs of pairs of lines with related situations. In the second activity, students practice writing equations to represent a situation, then examine points on and off the pair of lines in context. In the associated Algebra lesson, students continue this work and begin to solve systems of equations.

Students reason abstractly and quantitatively (MP2) when they go back and forth connecting equations and graphs with situations.

Learning Goals

Teacher Facing

  • Match descriptions, equations, and graphs representing the same situation.
  • Write equations representing a situation and solve the equation

Student Facing

  • Let’s examine graphs of lines representing situations.
