Lesson 9

Using Technology for Statistics

These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 1, Lesson 9 support success in that lesson.

Lesson Narrative

The mathematical purpose of this lesson is to introduce students to using technology to calculate statistics as well as select the best data display to represent the information well. Following the Algebra lessons that give students an introduction to spreadsheet use, in the assoicated Algebra lesson, students will use technology to compute basic statistics and create data displays. In this lesson, students prepare by practicing spreadsheet skills to compute some statistics from a list of data and selecting appropriate data displays. Students must attend to precision (MP6) as they think about what information should be shown about the state data and which display best represent that information.

Students will access and navigate GeoGebra by following the link: https://www.GeoGebra.org/classic/spreadsheet. The work in this lesson will prepare students for later lessons when they will use GeoGebra to analyze data sets.

Student Facing

  • Let’s explore technology used to represent data and calculate statistics.

Required Materials

Required Preparation

It is recommended that the GeoGebra spreadsheet and one-variable stats tools be used, which is part of the math tools provided with the digital version of these materials and is available at https://www.GeoGebra.org/classic/spreadsheet. If you opt to use a different type of tool that can find summary statistics and create histograms and box plots, you may need to develop alternative technology instructions for your students. In the first classroom activity, you'll demonstrate how to enter data, create representations, and compute statistics, so it is recommended that you practice ahead of time to become comfortable with these tools.
