Lesson 5
Combining Events
Lesson Narrative
The mathematical purpose of this lesson is to describe events composed of other events and to calculate the probability of events using information represented in tables and in Venn diagrams. The work of this lesson connects to previous work because students used two-way tables and two-way frequency tables to calculate probabilities for some events. The work of this lesson connects to upcoming work because student will learn to use the addition rule to calculate probabilities. When students compare probabilities calculated through experimentation to probabilities calculated by using samples spaces they are reasoning abstractly and quantitatively (MP2).
Learning Goals
Teacher Facing
- Calculate the probability of events using information in tables and in Venn diagrams.
- Interpret (orally and in writing) Venn diagrams and tables to describe events composed of other events.
Student Facing
Let’s look at ways to describe events composed of other events.
Required Materials
Required Preparation
One pair of number cubes is needed for each student for the print version of the activities. A digital number cube simulator is available in the digital version of the activity. Devices are required for the digital version of the activity Number Cube Descriptions.
Learning Targets
Student Facing
- I can use tables and Venn diagrams to represent sample spaces and to find probabilities.
