Lesson 24

Quadratic Situations

These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 7, Lesson 24 support success in that lesson.

Lesson Narrative

In this lesson, students examine a quadratic equation in a particular situation and are reminded of how to solve a system of linear equations. In the associated Algebra 1 lesson, students solve systems of equations involving a quadratic equation making use of the techniques they learned in this unit. Students are supported by practicing interpreting a quadratic equation in a situation so they can make sense of the solution to the system of equations. They are also supported by recalling methods for solving a system of linear equations and, in the discussion, considering which methods might also work in a system involving a quadratic equation.

Students must reason abstractly and quantitatively (MP2) when they connect a situation to its representation as an equation or graph.

Learning Goals

Teacher Facing

  • Interpret parts of a quadratic equation in terms of the situation.
  • Solve a system of linear equations.

Student Facing

  • Let’s work with situations and quadratic equations.
