Lesson 11
Finding Perfect Squares
These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 7, Lesson 11 support success in that lesson.
Lesson Narrative
In this lesson, students examine quadratic equations and expressions that can be written as perfect squares. In the first activity after the warm-up, students solve simple quadratic equations that involve a term squared equal to a constant. In the next activity, students use a row game to rewrite quadratic expressions into a form that involves perfect squares. In the associated Algebra 1 lesson, students begin to recognize quadratic expressions that can be written as perfect squares. In the row game, students have the opportunity to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others (MP3) when they arrive at different answers and must discuss in order to ensure they have the same answers.
Learning Goals
